Up and Running in 10 Minutes
Here is what your first day with SMAD Portal looks like. From sign-up to your first deliverable in five steps.
Sign up and explore the Sample Mission
Create your account and land on the Portal dashboard. A pre-loaded LEO Earth Observation sample mission is waiting with 50 requirements, 15 risks, populated mass and power budgets, and phase gate progress. Click through to see what a complete mission looks like.
The Mission Dashboard shows budget summaries with green and yellow margin indicators, a risk matrix, phase gate status across all subsystems, and a requirements count by category. Everything is interactive.
Create your mission and import requirements
Click "Create Mission" and name your program. Import requirements from CSV, paste them in directly, or add them one at a time. SMAD Portal maps parent-child relationships and builds the hierarchy automatically.
The requirements list shows your imported data with L1, L2, and L3 levels. Each requirement has a status badge, priority, and linked subsystem. The import summary tells you how many were created and if any had issues.
Set up your risk register
Navigate to Risks and add your top program risks. Assign likelihood and consequence scores, link risks to affected requirements, and set mitigation plans. The risk matrix updates automatically.
A 5x5 risk matrix shows your risks color-coded by severity. The risk list below shows each risk with its score, status, linked requirements, and mitigation owner.
Configure phase gates and review criteria
Open Phase Gates and set up your review milestones: SRR, PDR, CDR, or whatever your program uses. Add criteria for each gate, assign them to subsystems, and mark their current status as Green, Yellow, or Red.
A grid of phase gates shows each review with a progress bar and color-coded status summary. Click into a gate to see every criterion, its status, and any notes from the review team.
Generate your first deliverable
Click the export button on any phase gate to generate a PDF summary. The document includes requirements traceability, budget margins, risk status, and gate readiness in the format your review board expects.
A PDF preview shows a formatted phase gate summary with the mission name, date, overall status, requirements trace table, budget margins chart, and risk summary. One click downloads it.

Common Questions
Do I need IT approval to start a pilot?
No. The cloud version runs on Vercel and Supabase with SOC 2 compliant infrastructure. For programs with stricter requirements, we offer air-gapped self-hosted deployment on your own infrastructure.
Can I export all my data?
Yes. Every table in SMAD Portal supports CSV export. Requirements, risks, verifications, budgets, and phase gates can all be exported at any time. Your data is always yours.
Is it ITAR compliant?
The self-hosted deployment option runs entirely on your infrastructure with no external network calls. The cloud version uses US-based hosting. Contact us for a detailed security review for your specific compliance requirements.
How does it compare to DOORS?
SMAD Portal is not a DOORS replacement. It is a mission engineering workspace that includes requirements traceability alongside budgets, risks, phase gates, and engineering calculators. If your only need is requirements management, DOORS is purpose-built for that. If you need the full mission context, SMAD Portal connects everything.
What happens after the 30-day pilot?
You choose a plan that fits your team. Starter at $29/month for individuals, Pro at $79/month for teams, or Enterprise at $149/month for programs needing advanced features and priority support. No data is deleted if you need more time to decide.
Can my whole team use it during the pilot?
Yes. The pilot includes full platform access for your team. Invite colleagues from the Settings page and assign mission roles so everyone has the right level of access.
